Under The HOLLYWOOD Sign – Poem – By Peter Nolan Smith

Desert scrub weaved between gleaming mansions
Above Sunset Boulevard
To the new wilderness where coyotes hunted pets
Jake lived under the HOLLYWOOD sign
The letters OD filled his bedroom window.

Thar loved lying in bed with Jake
His skin was so soft for a man
Almost as soft as Thar’s
If only Thar could be so hairy.

Thar was from up north
Oregon way
Jake was Marin County.
Their accents were so West Coast
When they made love

“Oh, yes, nail me to the wall.”

Jake was no top
He under Thar gave them pleasure.

Day shot for day
Coffee
Expresso
Movies
BELLE DU JOUR
Life imitating life
Night shot for night

They were young and in love
With life and the night jasmine on the air
Underneath the HOLLYWOOD sign

Dreams of fame and fortune

Films stealing souls
Young people willing to sacrifice their souls
But few worry about their eternal soul
Underneath the HOLLYWOOD sign

CUT TO record player
CUT TO Jake’s hands
He holds Johnny Thunders’ YOU CAN’T PUT YOUR ARMS AROUND A MEMORY
CUT TO
A sheet over Thar
A naked foot

The record is on

Jake drops to his knees
Thar’s toes in his mouth

Thar and Jake didn’t share memories.
They had the Now
They had LA
Tonight they had each other
All of each other
Under the HOLLYWOOD sign
