Gasohol – Pro / Con

Thai auto dealers have confirmed that their cars and motorcycles can run on Gasohol 95 and 91 without any engine damage. Thousands of rai are being converted to sugar cane production to answer the predicted surge in demand for Gasohol. Sugar sweeter than candy to free the world from Gas.

I had been a hippie in the 70s and decided to reduce my carbon footprint by switching to Gasohol for my motorbike, a Yamaha Nuevo. At first I was happy with the performance. The bike seemed to run faster and the cost of Gasohol was 3 baht less than regular unleaded. Not only Green, but saving money for my beer fund.

This elation dimmed with the emergence of strange engines noises. I ignored them for a day or two, until my bike died on Sukhumvit while passing a heavy-loaded lorry.

Life and death situation for the sake of Al Gore. My body splattered acrss the highway to save the planet. The trucks’ wheels were inches from my bike. I weaved off the road. Fuck global warming. I filled my tank with 91 octane.

Gasohol mai dii.” My mechanic suggested that if I wanted to cut emissions, then I should ride a bicycle.

A push bike wouldn’t survive on Suicide Highway or Sukhumvit crossing, but it certainly does make for some heart-pounding moments on 3rd Road. Especially at the Chaiyapoon intersection whose asphalt is covered with various spray-painted accident images.

Watch out for that damn bike or jak-ra-kaan yee.
