Angkor Arms Hotel - Sihanoukville
Overland from Pattaya to Sihanoukville was relatively painless. 9 hours on mini-vans with relatively adequate AC. $40. Nick and I booked into the Angkor Arms in the town center. Stinky went off to the backpacker haunt, Victory Hill.
“What you think are the chances of seeing him again?” Nick watched the smelly Dutchman disappear into the early evening.
“Probably 3-1.” Most people travel the same routes in Asia.
“Care to make a bet?” Nick used to be a croupier.
“1000 baht.” The amount was the standard wager amongst friends in Pattaya.
“Fine.” Nick shook my hand and we entered the Angkor Arms.
The Angkor Arms’ previous existence had been across Ekareach Street. The corner now dominated by a 7/11 lookalike, except they had real food and sold wine. We were greeted by a large burly Frenchman, who explained the owner had suffereda heart attack.
“He did not die, but he needed someone to run these place.”
“Frenchmen running an English pub?” I glanced at Nick, who was a well known anti-froggie.
“Why not?” Roland had been a light engineer for concerts in France. His partner in the business was working the bar. His name was also Roland. “You will see a lot of French here now. After all France is not France anymore.”
This plaint was an echo from hundreds of garlic-eaters over the last years. The reasons from the Gallic failure range from too many Arabs to high living costs.
“We have two rooms. The last. After all it is the New Year.”
The rooms were big with AC and a bath. $20.
Nick and I showered and then met at the bar for a beer. Angkor draft $1/ mug. The music was good. The Clash followed by Ten Years After. “I never hear any good music in Pattaya.”
“Boy band and Hotel California.” Nick hated the Eagles and asked, “You have the Jam?”
Roland shook his ponderous head. “No, but waht about Sham 69.”
Nick sang all the words to BORSTAL BREAKOUT.
We ordered BLTs. They were okay, but you don’t go to a bar for good. Well, maybe some. They were no girls. Only Roland and Roland, but Nick and I had no trouble with that. We are only men too, n’est pas?
