Long Weekend

Labor Day was established to commemorate the deaths of Pullman Train Strikers at the hands of the federal government. This history has faded from the collective memory of America and the country now celebrates the holiday as the end of summer with BBQs, mass exoduses to the beach and mountains, drunk driving contests, and country fairs.

This long weekend I stayed in New York to avoid the lemming rush to the country.

I played basketball on DeKalb Avenue, drank beer at Frank’s Lounge, and bicycled to Red Hook to drink more beer.

Tomorrow it’s back to work at the metal shop.

Next year maybe the Democrats will extend the Labor Day weekend to four days.

The GOP are planning on cutting it to two if victorious in the by-elections.

Fuck em both.
