Morals 101 will be a new lesson for Thai teachers, as the nation’s Education Minister warned that state school teachers found in extra-marital liaisons will be severely punished by a civil service tribunal. Present penalties for transgressions of lak-lop must be ineffectual and the proposed strictures have been upgraded to permanent dismissal from the civil service and all the creature comforts of having to teach school in an overcrowded school to kids high on sugar.
Before to this edict I had been ignorant of this mee-choo plague pestering the ranks of the teachers. Steamy after-school or even during school trysts. Kissing and worse behind the closed cloak room doors. Scandalous behavior unbecoming teachers. Of course the question arises as to what constitutes adultery or gaa-may-soo-mi?t-chaa-jaan.
Two married teachers going to a love hotel after school definitely merits the definition of adultery. A married teachers sleeping with a single teacher means the married teacher is guilty of sin. Holding hands is forgivable but maybe not according to Thai traditions. Losing your pension might seem harsh, until remembering that lying with another person’s spouse has been punishable by stoning in the Bible and still occurs in Iran.
So Thai teachers should be happy about escaping a stoning.
