Booze Ban Thailand Redux June 2007

The Thailiban is getting ready to enforce new alcohol restrictions on the Land of Smiles. Liquor ads will be banned and the sale of booze within 500 meters of a school or temple will be prohibited by the law. The health minister claimed this new policy will solve the nation’s excessive drinking problems, however hotel and retaurant owners complain that the the distance will include such famed entertainment areas as Patpong, Nana Plaza, Pattaya’s Walking Street, Phuket Town and Koh Samui’s tourist destinations.

A map of Pattaya blotted by 500 meter radii blanks out the entire city.

No booze anywhere below Sukhumvit.

“We are not saying no drinking.” The health minister smiled for the cameras. “We only want moderation. We don’t want new drinkers to get attracted by the advertising or product displays. Alcohol should be sold in proper places. We are talking in detail now about the sale times and places.”

Remember Thaksin’s weird no-alcohol hours.

The only place that law didn’t apply was 7/11.

Beer and whiskey all the time.

This government is temporary, but sometimes it seems like they’ve been here forever. Thankfully I chedked for schools and temples around my soi.

Nothing.

Thailiban free zone.
